Hawk the Slayer

Well, I'm starting this whole blogging thing all over again after blogger ( blogspot?) decided to erase my old account,so I thought I'd start off fresh this time with a rare, yet truly bizarre first posting. And that subject my dear friends,is Hawk the Slayer. Now,I won't go into great detail about the movie, but it's essentially your basic sword and sorcery film about a man and his loyal companions who seek revenge against non-other than Lord Voltan (Jack Palance) who seems similar to Darth Vader in certain ways ( maybe it's the helmet that does it). In addition,he's also Hawk's (John Terry's) brother, who appears to be at least 40 years older than hawk himself. Which is funny because Voltan doesn't appear to be much younger than his father, whom he murders in order to wield his father's secret magical powers, only to fail miserably.

This movie, while being a sword and sorcery film, still retains elements of light fantasy and in some cases, even mimics the use of the force from STAR WARS. It's campy, the background scenes in the film are not very inspiring, the music sounds like something from a 70's disco-tech and it has an overall plucky sense of humor, but regardless a very fun movie to watch.

I actually liked the powers of Hawk's sword, but in retrospect all it pretty much did was allow the sword to return to his hand after he dropped it....and glow a little.

Use the force.....Hawk?

If you've never saw the film, the scene below will give you some idea of what's in store should you choose to watch it.

If you we're expecting a more serious movie, this one's not for you. Those expecting a campy joyride back to 1981,will come to appreciate this film in all it's cheesy goodness. Even the part involving magic silly string used to entangle one of Voltan's guards.

I almost forgot to mention that Hawk the Slayer was also turned into a novelization ( Written by director Terry Marcel and Harry Robertson). Which I have never read, but I assume it was a lot like the movie, with the exception of slightly more details to fill in the blanks.

In the habit of not giving away spoilers,I won't say much about the flick, you'll just have to see it for yourselves. But everything you'd most likely expect in a Corman-esqe type of film is present..minus gratuitous breast shots, though that seems to be this particular movie's lacking quality, instead we're treated to a missionary full of nuns....doesn't that sound fun?

I hope no one gets a whiff of the massive dump I just took in my pants!

Watching Hawk the Slayer recently, harkened back to the old AD&D games of the late 70's and early 80's which is perhaps what best inspired the film's audience back in 1981. While even today,it strongly resonates that same old-school charm lacking in today's modern fantasy. It's a shame really, but I almost wished this film had been a long-running series. The sequel,Hawk the hunter has been rumored, but sadly; talks of the film have died down since it was first announced back in 09.

Until next time my friends, take care and see ya next post.

HeroQuest

Well, it's been a while since I did one of these articles, but today was one of those drudgingly boring sorts of days, ripe for blogging. So out of that dreadful, painfully awkward boredom, I present to you a game I was rather fond of all those years ago; I give you HeroQuest! I used to love this game! What am I saying,I still love this game. It's easy, it's challenging and most of all, it's still a lot of fun to play. In fact,it's one of the simplest board games of this type I've ever played. Though I do believe it to be more of a hybrid of both fantasy and sword and sorcery, the distinction isn't clear, nor is it all that important in this game. On one hand you have orcs and elves, and on the other you have a barbarian and an evil sorcerer, who to me appears very similar to Skeletor from Masters of the Universe. I was lucky to find myself a copy of this game at an outlet store back in the early 90's, still brand new in the shrink-wrap. I'm glad I

The art of Frank Frazetta

Today's subject is a very special one, which is proving quite difficult for me to even begin without wanting to sound like a Wikipedia article. In the same light,I'd decided I didn't want to delve into the life and death of Frank Frazetta too heavily, there are more than enough websites with that information available on-line. Then again,I didn't want this particular article to be all pictures. All style and no substance so to speak. Instead I wanted to focus on his life's work and the stunning imagery he created over the course of his career, but in doing so,no matter how much I fought against it;the pictures won the battle over words. Because let's face it,that's what he did best. The death dealer Frazetta had a way of forming chaos into something more tangible. Each painting told a story of it's own, usually in the form of conflict between men or beasts or victory over a captive female. Strong, independent women we're also common themes in his
